Bioidentical Hormone Pellet Therapy Pre-Procedure and Post-Procedure Instructions
Pre-Procedure Instructions
- Continue your regular medications unless otherwise directed by your provider.
- If medically appropriate, avoid aspirin, NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen or naproxen), fish oil, vitamin E, and other blood-thinning supplements for 3–5 days prior to your procedure.
- Shower the morning of your appointment. Do not apply lotions, creams, or oils near the upper buttock or hip area.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment.
- Eat a light meal and remain well hydrated prior to the procedure.
- Please notify the clinic if you have:
- Fever or chills
- An active infection
- A skin infection near the insertion site
- Use of prescription blood thinners
Post-Procedure Instructions
First 24 Hours
- Keep the bandage clean and dry.
- Do not shower for 24 hours following the procedure.
- Ice packs may be applied to the area for 15–20 minutes at a time to minimize swelling or bruising.
Activity Restrictions
For 3–5 Days
Avoid:
- Vigorous exercise
- Heavy lifting greater than 20 pounds
- Squats or lunges
- High-impact activities
For 7 Days
Avoid:
- Swimming pools
- Hot tubs
- Baths or soaking the area
Light walking and routine daily activities are permitted.
Wound Care
- Remove the outer bandage after 24 hours.
- Leave Steri-Strips in place until they fall off naturally, typically within 3–7 days.
- Showering is permitted after 24 hours, but avoid soaking the insertion site.
Common Side Effects
The following are common and generally temporary:
- Mild bruising or soreness at the insertion site
- Minor bleeding or swelling
- Temporary acne or fluid retention
(more common with testosterone therapy)
When to Contact the Clinic
Please contact the clinic if you experience:
- Increasing redness, warmth, or swelling at the insertion site
- Fever or chills
- Persistent bleeding
- Pellet extrusion
- Severe pain
- Drainage from the insertion site
Follow-Up
Hormone levels are typically rechecked approximately 2½ months after pellet insertion.
Pellets generally last:
- Women: 3–4 months
- Men: 4–6 months
Your provider will recommend an individualized follow-up schedule based on your symptoms and laboratory results.
